corneal dystrophies

These present during adult life as corneal opacities which progressively interfere with vision. There is often a family history of similar eye conditions.

On examination there is usually no sign of inflammation, except in the rare cases where there is a recurrent corneal erosion.

The only effective treatment is corneal grafting.

Fuch's dystrophy is a degenerative condition associated with corneal oedema and cataracts.
