malabsorption

Last reviewed 01/2018

Folate is absorbed principally in the proximal jejunum.

Malabsorption causing folate deficiency may be due to:

  • gluten-induced enteropathy
  • resection of the small bowel
  • Crohn's disease
  • tropical sprue
  • Whipple's disease
  • GI lymphoma
  • congenital specific malabsorption
