  • beta-hydroxybutyrate
  • acetone

Ketonaemia, ketones in the bloodstream, is a physiological consequence of lipid metabolism. Ketogenesis is the normal pathway by which ketones are formed in the liver. Ketosis is the production of excessive ketones.

Ketones are a valuable energy source for tissues such as the brain and muscle. Also, they are involved in regulating the utilization of other energy sources.
