Following prosthetic valve replacement:

  • Early endocarditis, within 60 days of operation:
    • Staph. epidermidis, more commonly } 50% of
    • Staph. aureus } early cases
    • Gram -ve bacilli
    • Fungi

  • Late endocarditis, after 60 days post-op.
    • Strep. viridans - 40% of late cases
    • Staphylococci - 30% of late cases

Other surgery:

Viridans streptococci are more common following dental procedures; and faecal streptococci, following genito-urinary surgery or catheterisation.

Organisms found later after invasive procedures more closely resemble the picture seen in older adults, with additionally, Candida and Aspergillus.
