principles of prescription in pregnancy

Last reviewed 01/2018

Giving a drug to a pregnant mother is giving a drug to two or more human beings.

The following three points must be borne in mind when prescribing during pregnancy:

  • can therapeutic benefit be achieved by means other than pharmacology?

  • give drugs that have been in wide use for many years

  • give drugs that are used in pregnancy as an established medical practice. (This covers the doctor under the Congenital Disabilities [Civil Liability] Act 1977)
