Differential diagnosis of acute pancreatitis includes:

  • acute myocardial infarction
  • cholangitis
  • choelcystitis
  • diabetic ketoacidoosis
  • gastric outlet obstruction
  • intestinal infarction
  • pancreatic cancer
  • perforated peptic ulcer

Other causes of raised serum amylase are:

  • renal failure
  • macroamylasaemia
  • diseases of the salivary glands
  • extrapancreatic abdominal diseases associated with inflammation
    • e.g. - acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, intestinal obstruction or ischemia, peptic ulcer, and gynecological diseases
