The contraindications to surgery in radial dysplasia include:
- lack of elbow flexion
- extremely hypoplastic forearm; this includes a lack of radial wrist muscles in the presence of weak ulnar muscles; in this scenario, even with radialization a recurrence of radial deviation will occur - an ulnocarpal fusion is the preferred technique
- bilateral severe radial dysplasia
- severe systemic illness, usually related to congenital anomalies in other systems
- adults who have adjusted to their deformity
