- hypersensitivity reactions e.g. skin reactions
- ototoxic and vestibulotoxic effects
- nephrotoxic - more likely in patients with pre-existing renal disease
- may exacerbate symptoms in patients with myasthenia gravis (neuromuscular blocking effects)
- malabsorption and superinfection of the oropharynx with yeasts may occur with neomycin
