thiosulphate

Last reviewed 01/2018

Thiosulphate can be used in the treatment of cyanide poisoning; it increases the rate of detoxification of cyanide by providing a substrate for the rhodanase enzyme, thus converting cyanide to thiocyanate. It is not very effective when used alone because it penetrates cell membranes more slowly than cyanide.

Sodium thiocyanate is excreted in the urine and this results in osmotic diuresis.
