  • acute pyelonephritis
  • Henoch-Schonlein purpura

  • colic - in infants
  • drugs eg salicylates, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, some antibiotics, imipramine, sodium valporate, iron preparations, some anticancer drugs.

Rarer causes include:

  • lead poisoning
  • sickle cell disease
  • torsion of the ovary or testis
  • acute porphyria
  • pancreatitis
  • primary peritonitis
  • meningitis
  • migraine
  • peptic ulcer
  • reflux oesophagitis
  • hydronephrosis
  • renal calculus
