significant signs in infants

  • reduced muscle tone
  • dehydration (tachycardia, dry mouth, reduced skin turgor and sunken fontanelle are late signs)
  • reduced response to stimuli
  • tachypnoea, marked rib recession or grunting
  • reduced capillary return
  • rectal temperature >38.5 degrees centigrade
  • marked pallor
