Adenocarcinoma of the appendix resembles histologically similar tumours elsewhere in the large bowel, although mucus secretion is more pronounced. Classically, the tumour arises at the base of the appendix in patients over the age of 50 years.
It may present as an incidental finding, as acute appendicitis, or as an appendix abscess. Invasion of the caecum is extremely hard to distinguish from primary caecal carcinoma.
