Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis is a rare inflammatory disease of the gallbladder. It is found in 1-8% of those removed surgically.

It is important because:

  • it can be confused with carcinoma at operation
  • it has a tendency to form fistulas into neighbouring structures such as the duodenum
