investigation of asymptomatic raised aminotransferase levels

Last reviewed 01/2018

The investigation of asymptomatic raised aminotransferase levels is divided into:

  • first line
  • second line

If after first and second line investigations the cause of the elevated aminotransferases is not apparent then:

  • if the levels are more than twice normal a liver biopsy may be indicated
  • if the levels are less than twice normal then a policy of watchfull waiting may be appropriate
