Investigations for suspected craniopharyngiomas include:

  • plain skull radiology - calcification in or above the pituitary fossa is seen in 80% of cases
  • CT - lesion of mixed density in the suprasellar region containing both solid and cystic components
  • MRI - clarifies the precise position to the tumour to the third ventricle
  • combined pituitary stimulation test - assess need for pituitary hormone replacement therapy
