Portal vein occlusion is the second most common cause of portal vein hypertension in the UK. The principal causes are:

  • portal vein thrombosis - most common
  • splenic vein thrombosis - rare
  • congenital atresia or stenosis
  • extrinsic compression by lymphadenopathy - e.g. lymphoma, carcinoma
