pre-renal causes of postoperative renal failure

Last reviewed 01/2018

Pre-renal causes include:

  • hypotension, hypovolaemia - bleed, fluids. Losses perioperatively - evaporative, open abdomen etc.
  • Endotracheal tube losses - no moisture loss etc
  • Third spacing - loss of fluid to extracellular space pathologically with tissue damage. Abnormal fluid shifts.
  • Cardiac suppression - negative inotropic effect of anaesthesia
