hypopituitary coma

An acute hypopituitary crisis and coma may be precipitated in two ways:
- a patient with chronic pituitary failure may become comatose following an acute medical insult such as:
- infection
- trauma or surgery
- sedatives
- hypothermia
- a previously healthy patient may suffer an acute insult to the pituitary gland:
- trauma or surgery
- haemorrhage, notably post-partum
