causes of persistent traveller's diarrhoea

Causes include:

  • bacteria:
    • salmonellosis (usually causes an acute illness)
    • Campylobacter infection (usually causes an acute illness)
    • intestinal tuberculosis
  • protozoa:
    • giardiasis
    • cryptosporidiosis
    • amoebiasis
  • helminths:
    • strongyloidosis
    • colonic schistosomiasis
  • others:
    • postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome
    • inflammatory bowel syndrome
    • tropical sprue

Bloody diarrhoea suggests an invasive organism (e.g. C. jejuni, Shigella sp., Salmonella sp.). However these organisms may cause a persistent diarrhoea that is not watery.
