Causes include:
- anal fissure
- colonic polyps
- infective causes, such as dysentery
- intussusception
- ulceration of a Meckel's diverticulum or duplication cysts
- inflammatory bowel disease and colitis
- bleeding diatheses
- haemorrhoids
- trauma or abuse
