complications

These include:
- congestive heart failure due to progressive mitral regurgitation (3 to 10% of patients with symptomatic mitral valve prolapse)
- infective endocarditis (in 2-8% of patients with mitral valve prolapse)
- cerebral emboli
- sudden death - this is extremely rare in patients with mitral valve prolapse and is usually due to sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation
