reactive thrombocythaemia

Last reviewed 01/2018

Reactive thrombocytosis is commonly associated with:

  • inflammation
  • bleeding
  • malignancy
  • iron deficiency
  • following splenectomy

Counts may exceed 1,000,000 per cm^3. The platelets are functionally normal. Very severe iron deficiency may cause thrombocytopenia rather than thrombocytosis.
