Brain damage can be subdivided into primary and secondary, depending on when it occurs with respect to the original injury.

Primary brain damage is a result of cerebral contusion or diffuse axonal injury.

Secondary brain damage can be a result of:

  • Intracranial factors:
    • haematoma - extradural, subdural
    • brain swelling
    • subarachnoid haemorrhage
    • hydrocephalus
  • Extracranial factors:
    • hypoxaemia
    • hypotension
