convulsions(palliative care)

Last reviewed 01/2018

Convulsions may occur in patients with cerebral tumours or uraemia and if practicable should be treated with routine antiepileptics such as phenytoin or carbamazepine

If oral medication is no longer possible, options include:

  • Diazepam suppositories 10mg 1-2 p.r. every 4-8 hours
  • Phenobarbitone injection 50-200mg i.m. twice daily
  • Midazolam 5-40mg/24 hours s.c. via the syringe driver (usual starting dose 10mg)
