Indications:

  • herpes simplex infections
  • prophylaxis of influenza A infection
  • parkinsonism

Cautions:

  • psychosis
  • elderly patients
  • breast feeding
  • cardiovascular, hepatic or renal disease
  • recurrent eczema
  • avoid abrupt discontinuation of treatment

Contra-indications:

  • epilepsy
  • gastric ulceration

Side-effects:

  • nervousness
  • inability to concentrate
  • insomnia
  • dizziness
  • convulsions
  • hallucinations
  • gastrointestinal disturbances
  • skin discolouration
  • dry mouth
  • peripheral oedema
  • leucopenia
