diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis is by specific inhibitor activity.

Treatment depends upon the inhibitor level.

Approaches include:

  • immunosuppression to reduce antibody production
  • plasmaphoresis to reduce inhibitor levels
  • massive infusion of the appropriate factor
  • infusion of Factor IX concentrates for Factor VIII inhibitor - may bypass the inhibited clotting factor
  • Factor VIIa with Factor VIII bypassing activity
  • cyclophosphamide, usually combined with prednisolone, or porcine Factor VIII, may be used in Factor VIII inhibition
