Causes include:
- depressed gag reflex:
- anaesthesia - e.g. Mendelson syndrome
- bulbar palsy
- transient period of impaired consciousness:
- alcoholic blackout
- in the wake of seizures
- during sleep
- reflux oesophagitis
- oesophageal stricture
- tracheo-oesophageal fistula
