factors affecting transthoracic resistance

Last reviewed 01/2018

Factors changing transthoracic resistance and hence effectiveness of defibrillation include:

  • delivered energy
  • interface between electrode and skin - gels improve conduction
  • number of, and time between, discharges
  • electrode pressure - use about 11 kg or 25 pounds
  • phase of patient ventilation - best on full inspiration
