The treatment of myotonic dystrophy involves:

  • membrane stabilisers to reduce myotonia, including procainamide, phenytoin, quinine, quinidine, acetazolamide
  • identification and treatment of cataracts and diabetes mellitus
  • genetic counselling
  • avoiding sedative drugs as sensitivity is increased

General anaesthesia is hazardous and prior warning should be given to the anaesthetist if an operation is required.

Prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection is possible.
