The chest radiograph typically shows patchy alveolar infiltrates that do not resolve despite antibiotic therapy.
Lung function studies reveal a decreased vital capacity and decreased transfer factor. Flow rates may be normal, except in smokers.
CT scanning and bronchioalveolar lavage may be helpful.
Diagnosis is largely made on histological appearances of transbronchial biopsy specimens.
