unstable trinucleotide repeats

Last reviewed 01/2018

Dynamic mutations, notably the expansion of trinucleotide repeats within the genome, have been associated with a number of clinical disorders which can be subdivided into:

  • neurodegenerative diseases, such as Huntington's disease
  • mental retardation, such as fragile X syndrome

Myotonic dystrophy is caused by dynamic mutations but cannot be easily assigned to either group.
