papilloma

Last reviewed 01/2018

A papilloma is a benign tumour caused by overgrowth of all elements of the skin. They comprise a core of connective tissue and blood vessels with a lining of skin epithelium.

Papillomas can occur at any age but are more common in the elderly. They vary in size but are usually less than 1 cm in diameter. They tend to be pedunculated and are smooth, soft, solid and of any shape. They are frequently observed about the face and the neck but may arise anywhere. They are frequently multiple. There may be surface ulceration due to trauma.

Treatment is by excision.
