external biliary fistula

An external biliary fistula is an abnormal connection between the biliary tree and the exterior. Most commonly, they follow surgery on the biliary tract and result from damage to the main ducts or a leaking biliary anastomosis. Their extent may be assessed by radiography, usually sinograms or ERCP.
They may require surgical closure, although spontaneous repair usually occurs if there is no distal blockage to the flow of bile.
