Effects of passive smoking on the fetus:

  • restricted growth
  • increased perinatal mortality

Effects on non-smokers:

  • precipitating and sustaining factor in the development of cough, asthma, angina
  • increased risk of cancer: non-smoking women are 50% more likely to develop adenocarcinoma of lung if they lived with a smoker than women with non-smoking partners.
  • passive smoking accelerates the progression of atherosclerosis
