bone marrow transplantation
Last reviewed 01/2018
This is the intravenous infusion of haematopoietic progenitor cells to re-establish marrow function in a patient with damaged or defective bone marrow.
There are two main types:
- allogeneic - including syngeneic
- autologous
The bone marrow is usually harvested from the posterior iliac crest by repeated aspirations. Alternative sites are the anterior iliac crest and the sternum.
