  • exclude bilateral obstruction and then commence rehydration and alkalinization of the urine.
  • allopurinol treatment should started immediately.
  • haemodialysis is indicated if oliguria has become established.
  • percutaneous nephrostomy may be necessary in order to relieve extrarenal obstruction due to stones in the pelvis or ureters. These stones may require surgical removal or be passed spontaneously.
