disciform keratitis

Last reviewed 01/2018

Herpes simplex infection of the deep layers of the cornea results in:

  • corneal thickening
  • central corneal opacities

Treatment is difficult and often necessitates the simultaneous use of steroids and acyclovir (N.B. steroids are not used in the treatment of dendritic ulceration).

Scarring of the cornea is common; corneal grafting is then the only treatment.
