Inversion of the uterus occurs in 1 in 5000 deliveries. Rarely it is a spontaneous event but usually results from mismanagement of the third stage.
The Brandt-Andrews method for delivery of the placenta reduces the risk of uterine inversion.
Uterine inversion is more common when:
- cord traction is used for delivery of the placenta without effective guarding of the uterus
- there is a fundal implantation of the cord
- the uterus is lax
