Sclerema neonatorum is a serious disorder that involves subcutaneous fat, usually occuring in very ill neonates, for example premature infants or those with sepsis or cold injury.
The condition is characterised by rapid hardening of most of the subcutaneous fat and results in non-pitting induration and stiffness of the skin. About half of those affected by the condition die.
