The adverse effects of neuroleptics include:
- anti-adrenergic effects:
- postural hypotension with reflex tachycardia - especially after i.m. injection
- nasal congestion
- inhibition of ejaculation
- anti-cholinergic:
- blurred vision
- dry mouth
- urinary retention
- constipation
- precipitation of glaucoma
- dry skin - danger of hyperthermia in very hot climates
- tachycardia
- neuroleptic-induced movement disorders
- psychiatric:
- restlessness and agitation
- depression, which may respond to antidepressants
- epileptogenic:
- especially chlorpromazine
- Pimozide is the safest
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- miscellaneous side-effects
