Aetiologic factors in peptic oesophageal stricture include:

  • acid-related, but also bile
  • oesophageal clearing ineffective, specifically the oesophageal body
  • lower oesophageal sphincter failure
  • reduced mucosal protection
  • diminished sensitivity to perfusion with acid
  • extreme oesophageal protective response
