5 alpha-reductase inhibitors inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is more potent than testosterone in supporting prostatic hypertrophy.
Inhibition of 5-alpha reductase marginally improves flow rates and symptoms in men with bladder outflow obstruction due to benign prostatic hypertrophy.
