The left subclavian artery passes superiorly and laterally from the level of the T3/T4 intervertebral disc. It passes deep to the left sternocostal joint where it curves more steeply and laterally to lie deep to the inferior margin of the posterior triangle about a centimetre superior to the clavicle. It terminates at the outer margin of the first rib.
