hormonal therapy

Last reviewed 01/2018

Hormonal therapy is most often used in metastatic breast disease and prostatic malignancy. In such cases, it is not curative, but some patients may show a relatively prolonged response to treatment.

Many hormonal treatments are minimally toxic and often, may be used before chemotherapy.

Depot hormonal preparations which require parenteral administration such as GnRH analogues have been developed.

The use of adjuvant hormonal therapy - e.g. for certain subgroups of patients with breast cancers - appears to be effective and is widely prescribed.
