Staphylococcus aureus is the most common agent.

Also:

  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • pneumococcus
  • Haemophilus influenzae, especially in those under three years
  • gonococcus
  • gram negative rods, such as E. coli, Pseudomonas

Septic arthritis may be primary, or secondary to osteomyelitis of an adjacent bone.
