  • idiopathic:
    • most common
    • approximately half are familial

  • severe hypermetropia:
    • squint is a result of excessive reflex convergence secondary to excessive accomodation for near vision

  • severe myopia:
    • there may be an associated divergent squint

  • blindness in one eye
  • brain damage
  • a unilateral refractive error
