viral myositis

Viral myositis may be caused by:

  • influenza:
    • a mild myositis commonly accompanies influenza infection
    • post-influenzal myositis causes severe pain in the calf or occasionally the thigh as well
    • serum CK is raised

  • enteroviruses:
    • Coxsackie B viruses (especially B5 & B6) are associated with myositis
    • there is an association between Bornholm disease and myositis

  • hepatitis B, rubella, herpes & respiratory syncytial virus may rarely cause myositis
