ispaghula as a lipid-lowering drug

- can be used as an adjunct to lipid-lowering diet in patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolaemia
- probable mechanism of action via reduction of bile acid reabsorption; plasma triglyceride remains unchanged
- caution advised in patients with diabetes mellitus; also need to maintain adequate fluid intake
- contra-indications include intestinal obstruction, faecal impaction, colonic atony
