  • bacteriostatic: inhibition of protein synthesis in the bacterial ribosomes via disruption of the translation process from RNA to DNA
  • bactericidal: mechanism unknown

Also neomycin may be used in hepatic encephalopathy where it:

  • may reduce the gut flora which posess urease activity (so leading to a reduction in ammonia production in the gut)
  • may also inhibit absorption of protein in the gut
