Last reviewed 01/2018

Most patients with heart failure should be advised to drink alcohol in moderation. Heavy alcohol consumption has the following unwanted effects:

  • myocardial depression
  • myocardial toxicity
  • increased risk of arrhythmias especially atrial fibrillation
  • increased risk of hypertension

Patients with alcohol-related cardiomyopathy should abstain from alcohol.
